The legal team of former President Ricardo Martinelli warned through a statement that repeated media pressure from officials who are part of or have some connection with the current Executive, are seriously endangering the new penal system the country seeks to establish and judicial system in general.
In the document, the lawyers indicate that "these extrajudicial pressures to judiciary officials, including the Supreme Court, with outside interests from the judicial process, seeking to reach officials forcibly judicial decisions are not grounded in law or seeking to change these decisions in strict law".
Jurists emphasize that recent statements of fourth corruption fiscal, Ruth Morcillo, from attorney Guido Rodríguez and Solicitor General Rigoberto Gonzalez, publicly challenging decisions of the judiciary, add to already long list of unjustifiable interference seeking join this exert unlawful pressure on the courts at all levels.
"We respectfully ask the Supreme Court to once and for all, put a stop to this behavior, publicly rejecting these pressures and punishing officials who engage in them," the document stresses .
The statement, which is signed by ten lawyers, said that it is necessary that the authorities of the Supreme Court shall not be silent against these blatant pressures and interference. Furthermore , the product must prevent these pressures and interference , have to submit every decision should be taken as maximum justice corporation, to media assessments of those in power or people and groups linked to them. It is imperative that judges enforce the sacred principle of independence.
"The Supreme Court is the entity called to ensure respect for the rules and the Panamanian Constitution are fundamental pillars of our democracy and the rule of law by which we should watch and work for its improvement, and reject everything that violates and question, as is currently happening" posed the lawyers.
Moreover, defense lawyers of Martinelli insist on the call made to unions of lawyers, churches, the Association of Judges and other representative organizations of other important sectors of society, to speak out, demanding once and for all, justice in our country to operate free of any pressure and extrajudicial interference and because and just based on what is in files, on what the law and the Constitution and international agreements signed by our country determine.
