Supporters of Alma Cortés denounced the persecution of which the President responsible of Cambio Democrático (CD) is being subjected to by the Government, and warned that the legal basis used by Comptroller Federico Humbert to persecute her is untimely.
The spokesman for this opposition party, Luis Eduardo Camacho, argued that Mr. Humbert based this action on a decree to persecute Mrs. Cortés, which is dated February 12, 2016, however the investigation began eight months earlier.
"This shows that the Comptroller General, the National Security Council and the General Directorate of Revenue are working in a syndicated fashion to persecute Cambio Democrático, their leader and anyone who questions the mistakes of the Government," he said.
Mr. Camacho announced that in the coming days he will be filing a criminal complaint against the Controller General, because he is not even legally empowered to issue this type of regulation.
With this investigation, said CD spokesman, they are seeking to hinder the coordination that Mrs. Cortés is leading to defend Ricardo Martinelli, through precautionary measures that should impede her from carrying it out.
The trial against the former Minister began on June 5, 2015, when newspaper La Estrella published information reading that Mrs. Cortés was being subjected to a review of her properties by the authorities.
According to Mr. Camacho, this information came from the Security Council and is false, because at that time, Mrs. Cortés was not subject to investigation by any authority.
"All the properties which are mentioned in that information and that are today cited, a year later, were declared in the statement of income of the former Minister upon conclusion of her official participation in Government," said the opposition leader.
After this publication, on June 8, the Comptroller's Office issues a decision which opens an ex officio investigation against the President responsible of the political party.
