Controversy over legal appeal filed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Two days is the time frame given to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for them to send claims of unconstitutionality to the Supreme Court of Justice presented by former President Ricardo Martinelli´s legal team against the appeal of extradition requested by Judge Jerome Mejia.

However, the lawyers had problems at the time of submitting documents yesterday morning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sidney Sitton explained that the section of Files and Correspondence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs refused to forward the appeal to the Legal Department, arguing that they were following orders from above which to them means it is from Minister Isabel de Saint Malo.

In Sitton's view, this situation reflects the double discourse of the Vice President of the country.

"On the one hand, her speech says that she is respectful of treaties and conventions that Panama endorses in the field of human rights, but in practice she does the opposite," he said.

She was informed that at the Foreign Relations Ministry they have the claims under study, when it is not up to them to decide, Mr. Sitton said.

"We will return tomorrow (today). They are assuring us that they have the issue of opposition filed almost ready, resolution that resolves this issue and that the warning is just being studied," Mr. Sitton said.
