Epasa lodges appeal
Representatives of Editora Panama America, S.A. (Epasa) have lodged an appeal with the Inter- American Commission for human rights (CIDH) against an alleged effort on the part of the Panamanian national government aimed at suspending its operations. Epasa proceeded to launch the appeal, having been subject to repeated pressures from the national government. The publisher of Panama America and Critica newspapers was recently admonished byPresident Juan Carlos Varela, who admitted to the existence of a legal process aimed at shutting the company down. Journalists unions have voiced their concern at the news. Epasa has been the object of political persecution via a multitude of audits that the Panamanian Revenue Service has launched against it. The company currently faces a number of administrative complaints that the Revenue Service has brought against it.
